Hunger Games

By: Suzanne Collins

Questions:
1 What goes on as the story began?
2 Who is telling the story? How does this person perspective effect the way the story is told?
3 What is the initial or first problem faced by the main character?
From page 1-47

As we were told to pick a novel and do an independent novel study on the book, I just went thought the list of books, and I found the book " The Hunger Games" on the list. I heard about this book around two years ago, and all my friends who read the book told me that it's a really good book. So I thought why not give it a try? I asked Lizzie to lend me the book, that's how I got it in my hand.

The story began on a young girl's life, she is poor but strong; she is a hunter who has to support her younger sister and her mother. Her farther died in her young ages, so she needs to take care of the family. Imagine who hard it is for a young teenage girl to go to school and hunt for food for the family both at once. Luckily she has a hunting partner who cares about her, he hunts with her, and they share the food the got from the hunt; knowing that there is someone for you is way better than having to do everything on your own. But her life is not getting any better form there.

The young girl got sent to the Capitol to participate in the Hunger Games to fight for her life. Well she didn't really got picked, it was her younger sister who got picked, but she knows that her sister can't handle that pain, so she just volunteered, she knows it will be hard, but she still want to fight for it, only because of her sister. Form that we can see the main character is very caring and brave, she will give up her life for her sister's life, only a great older sister would do that.

Next that she will face is a game that she will rather lose with death or win. she knows how hard it will be, and we all know. But she doesn't have a sign of giving up. The story is told by her, so she really mentioned about how she feels how she described her feeling really made me know that the game is going to be scary but how she tell herself not to give up, made me think that she might win.

The first few chapters are all about her past life and here getting ready for the Hunger Games, it will be exciting to see how the game goes, and what type of problem she will face.

What is the setting of the novel? Is the setting important or could the novel be happening anywhere? why?
Why did you select this novel?
How does the author get you to read on or hold your interest?

This week I'm on the second part of my reading, and I do not regret choosing this book. I selected this book at first because of the tittle " Hunger Games", sounds pretty intense right? I thought the book will includes death and fight, and guess what? It does!! But not just that, it also includes relationships; different relationships between people. Most of them reflexes on our class theme humanity, from the book, I know that human are not that easy to understand, expecially when it comes to fight to death. the main character faces a lot of people in this story, but for some of them, she has to keep her attention up, because they can not become her true friend, they are one of the problem and the enimies that she will be facing as the game goes on, they will have o be killing each other.

This book really gets me reading because it has not mention about the real game yet, it has only talk about the training before the game, and the new "friends" that she is meeting, from the training, the games sounding really intense, so it gets me keep on reading, and see how the game goes and who will die first, but clearly, the game hasn't start yet, the author is really good at picturing the sence of the game by mentioning how the main character feels, this is getting really interesting.

Sometimes during the book, I start to picture how the story will go if it's set at somewhere else instead of District 12, but clearly it won't work out, no other countries will ever play this game that causes death at the end, so this story can not be at anywhere else. But setting do change, it starts at the main character's home town, then on a train, then to the training center, then last the real game's place. Hopefully next chapter the real game will began, and we can find out who will die first.

What new things are added to the original problem as the novel progresses?
What plot twists or unexpected events happen as the novel goes on?
Comment on the style of the novel. Is it easy or hard to follow the events?

This week's reading was exciting, I started reading "part2" of the book, which is the game. I start to understand way more about how the hunger games work; I'm so glad we don't have that in our country. There were way more murdering than I expected.
So now that the game starts, there were some unexpected events happen, Peeta, the boy who came from the same district as Katniss, say that he loves Katniss durning the interview, it was so surprising to see that part, because before he never showed one sign that he was interested. And saying that you love someone in front of tons of people and the camera takes lots of guts to do it, so from what I see of Peeta's character is that he is not so brave and it seems like he would never. I thought he tottally meant what he said, but really after the interview, it turns out to be only an act, he is only doing it to get sponsor for him and Katniss. But it still means somethin, Katniss starts to have feelings for him, but she is tellling herself to get over it because the game is starting.
The game shouldn't be easy at all, but Peeta is part of the " careers" and they are a team for now, they are trying to kill Katniss together, but Peeta said he loves Katniss, so it will be weird for the audience to see that him trying to kill her. Well it didn't happen, Peeta saved katniss life by telling her another tributes is behind her. and he left the careers. But that doesn't mean Katniss is save at the game, there are still another tributes trying to kill her and Peeta, the group of the careers are big and strong, and they are hunting to kill Katniss. So then Katniss teames up with Rue, a little girl from a different district. Rue reminds of Prim; Katniss' little sister back home, so Katniss loves to take care of her, but will this last long? So far Rue doesn't sound like a strong tribute.
After all the reading so far for this novel, I have to say that the style for this novel is pretty simple to read, it was written in first person the whole time, Katniss is telling the story the whole time. All the event are simple to follow, from the perparing for the game to the real game, the author explains it really weel, so I understanded the events really good, so I think the book it simple to follow and the story line is getting exciting, I think i'm getting to the climax soon.

Describe any new characters that are introduced? What is their purpose?
What is the climax of the novel?
How are the major and minor conflicts solved?

This week I read further about the game, there are way more characters being shown, and they game got a lot more exciting. And there were some romance in this portion as well too. The cilmax happen in this period, and we are need the ending of the game, expect for one more character that needs to be killed.katniss and Peeta made some love in a cave, and now they are a team now, both trying to kill one tirbutes.

Durning this week's reading, one new important character is being introduce: Cato, a tribute from some other dictricts. He sounds like a strong tribute for the game, Peeta and Katniss are trying to kill him, and all other tributes are died, but he is still living. Well he happened earlier the story once too, but now he is really a inportant character for the book. He sound scary, strong and powerful at the same time, and he has a lot of weapons for killing.

Not just a new character being introduced, the climax happened too. Peeta got a serious injury that's nearing death by Cato, but luckly Katniss found him in the woods and saved him from death, it sure wasn't an easy job. At the main time, those two made some love together thought out the problem. This is probably the most exciting part of the novel, because if Peeta is dead, the whole ending would be different.

How the problem was solved? It was all Katniss' smart thinking. She puted Peeta to sleep with a medcine, so that Peeta can't stop her from goinf aganist other tributes to get the shot to heal Peeta, in order to get the shot, Katniss has to go to the middle of the arena where other tributes will be there too to get their stuff to survived. Peeta won't let katniss to go dead for him, but she put him to sleep then go and get the shot, and put it in Peeta's arm. it sure healed Peeta alot, now he is not nearing death. And the romance happened in that little cave they are in.

The book is nearing the end, and the exciting things have happened, not it's all about to wrap up. Who will be the winning tribute, we will find out soon!

  1. Is the novel believable?
  2. Why would you (or why wouldn't you) recommend this novel to a friend?
  3. Why did (or didn't) the novel meet your expectations?

This week I finished the whole book, I found out who are the winners and how the book got ended. Peeta and Katniss are both the winners of the game, both tributes from district twelve. This century is so different from others, because each year there's only has 1 winner for the game, but this century, there were two! I love how it ended, how the fact that Katniss and Peeta both get to go home safely, and Cato got kill at the end. Well I don't really think the book is that believable, because in real life no one fights to death at game that's in an arena where there are starving animals around. So I think this is really fiction novel that no way in real life it could happen. Well even it's fiction I still enjoyed the story line, it was a good mix of romance and action, a book that only has romance can be so boring, but only fiction can be too exciting that there's no part that the reader can take a break. So this book has both, and it's a good amount of mix.
I would recommend this book to a friend, well this book was recommended to me by a friend in the first place, and I really enjoyed it, I love the story line, and the way the author discribed all the characters were so clear and interesting. Also there were a few forshadowing to keep the reader keep on reading. So this book sure meet my expectation, but I thought there will only be one winner, so I wondered for a long who's going to win, Katniss or Peeta. But at the end both of them win, which leads to a happy ending. But it will be even more interesting if only one of them win, and dicrib how the other died, that will keep the readers talking and thinking about it, but I like the ending this way too.
Overall, I love this book so much and I will read the rest of the series.

Focus Assignment

#1 Plot

The book's name was "Hunger Games" that's the name of the game in this book, so the tittle tells pretty much what the whole story is about. Hunger Games take place in it's own arena loaced in North America where lies the nation of Panem, the arena sounds like a wild forest, because there were a few animal disaster durning the game. The tribute from district twelve: Katniss Everdeen has to participate in this harsh and cruel game, and the story is told from her point of view; she is not the only one from district twelve, another boy: Peeta, is also a tribute from district twelve, and he is also the one who katniss made some "love" with though out the game.

The whole story is fulled with up and downs, exciting parts come out of everywhere, the killing never stops. There's no any period of time that the story is nice and smooth, tributes from all district never stop fighting each other. But there is a part that I think is the climax: when Peeta got injured badly by Cato, a tribute from other districts, Katniss found him deadly lying in the mud, she used all she got trying to save him to life, she even risked her own to get the medicine for Peeta, it was sweet and exciting to read that part, eventhough it was only an act for the audiences to see for entertainments. At the end katniss battled her way there and back to get the medicine for Peeta, and gave him the shoot, it sure did heal Peeta from dying. So problem solved, and the two lovers are in the forest together trying to win the game.

The climax was quit near the end, but the story was exciting the whole way when the real game started, and that's when the confilct starts to happen, first the main character: Katniss finds out that Peeta joins the "careers", and they are all hunting for Katniss in order to kill her. Then Katniss teamed up with Rue, a girl from another district who reminds Katniss of Prim, those two are trying two ruined the "careers" campus, it worked, but Rue's life didn't last long, now Katniss losed her "teammate", these now becomes the new conflict, then Katniss went to look for Peeta, that's when all the " romance" starts to play. Last but not least, one more tribute to fight: Cato, the boy who injured Peeta badly, and the one who always kills. It's not easy to kill Cato at all, but that's what they must do inorder to win the game. Finally, Cato got kill and the two tributes from district twelve: Katniss and Peeta, get to go back home saftly.

Overall, the story is super exciting and fast pasted, and all the little conflicts made it extract exciting and fun to read, and i'm glad the climax gpt a wraped up, it was all an act, but a happy ending is always good. There are two more books after this, I'm very curious and interested to know what will happen next!
